The 504 Democratic Club was founded in 1983 by disability rights advocates. We are the only political club focusing on disability rights. We are primarily a coalition of Democrats who accept persons affiliated with other parties as Members because no other political party will adequately address our issues. Together, we are working towards inclusion of disabled persons in the political and social fabric of society.
Members hail from all five boroughs and neighboring counties, reaching across every conceivable line to include a richly diverse group of people with disabilities, renowned disability rights activists, public officials, friends, family and allies who support the concepts set forth in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. Section 504 mandates that all federally funded programs must be fully accessible to all people with disabilities. It is the precursor of the more universal Americans with Disabilities Act.
We believe that full integration can only be accomplished by demanding ADA compliance and work with our colleagues and representatives in public office to effect positive change. In the political arena and in society at large, all must come to understand that anything less than an equal place at the table for disabled people is unacceptable.
We invite you to join with us in working to acheive our goal of equal rights for all.
